Asesinos sin rostro by Henning Mankell5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() An act of the imagination, an effort to prove to his comrades that life must be more than mere survival, cuts short Nelio's life.Īlready published in thirteen countries, Chronicler of the Winds was short-listed for the Nordic Council Prize for Literature and was nominated for the Swedish Publishers Association's August Prize. ![]() La personalidad del detective Wallander, con sus virtudes y defectos. Henning Mankell logra crear una atmósfera oscura y tensa, en la que el lector se ve inmerso en la investigación de los crímenes que suceden en Ystad. After bandits cruelly raze his village, he joins the legions of abandoned children living in the city's streets. Asesinos sin rostro es una novela policiaca que no decepcionará a quienes buscan una trama emocionante y bien desarrollada. One of the millions of poor people "forced to eat life raw," Nelio tells his unforgettable story over the course of nine nights. He is Nelio, a leader of street kids, rumored to be a healer and a prophet, and possessed of a strangely ancient wisdom. On the rooftop of a theater in an African port, a ten-year-old boy lies slowly dying of bullet wounds. In Chronicler of the Winds, he gives us something different: a beautifully crafted novel that is a testament to the power of storytelling itself. World famous for his Kurt Wallander mysteries, Henning Mankell has been published in thirty-five countries, with more than 25 million copies of his books in print. How can that be possible?"-from Chronicler of the Winds ![]() And however unlikely it may sound, it seemed to me that he died without once being afraid. ![]()

Skull Full of Kisses by Michael West5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() Hopefully, this isn’t common in other copies but it did distract me and pull me from the stories. My print copy had sections where the print was faded and difficult to read. If there is a flaw with the book, it’s in the actual printing itself. Even his title shows how playful West is-it comes from the fact at conventions West actually has a skull full of chocolate kisses for fans. Here is a writer who knows his craft and it allows him to cut loose and have fun with his horror. ![]() His stories are tight, no wasted words with excellent pacing. What wicked twist was going to grab me and get my heart pounding in my chest? Okay, sure, I guessed a few of the surprise endings, but the journey was more than enough.Īs passionate as the creativity is in this collection, West equally proves to be a skilled writer. I couldn’t wait to get to the next story to see what other monster was waiting for me. West makes the reader feel like we’re glued to the old late-night horror show on television. In his ten story collection, SKULL FULL OF KISSES, West takes us through different lands and even different times, each one with a nightmare all its own. ![]() And something that West obviously takes a lot of pride in. I know that’s a simple statement but it actually carries a lot of weight. ![]()

Ella maise marriage for one5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() Jack Hawthorne was nothing like what I'd imagined for myself. ![]() It took him only minutes to talk me into a business deal…erm, I mean marriage, and only days for us to officially tie the knot. Well…I did all those things except the walking away part. You'd think I'd laugh in his face, call him insane-and a few other names-then walk away as quickly as possible. A stranger who had been dumped by her fiancé only weeks before. A complete stranger who had never even heard of him. You'd think a guy who looked like him-a bit cold maybe, but still striking and very unattainable-would only ask the love of his life to marry him, right? You'd think he must be madly in love. The day he lured me into his office-which was also the first day we met-he proposed. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() The work claims to expose the secret springs of their public actions, as well as the private lives of the emperor and his entourage. In the eyes of many scholars, the Secret History reveals an author who had become deeply disillusioned with Emperor Justinian, his wife Theodora, the general Belisarius, and his wife Antonina. Current consensus generally dates it to 550, or less commonly, 558. The Secret History covers roughly the same years as the first seven books of The History of the Wars and appears to have been written after they were published. Its existence was already known from the Suda, which referred to it as Procopius's "unpublished works" containing "comedy" and "invective" of Justinian, Theodora, Belisarius and Antonina. Procopius's now famous Anecdota also known as Secret History (Greek:, Apkryphe Histora Latin: Historia Arcana) was discovered centuries later at the Vatican Library in Rome and published in Lyon by Niccol Alamanni in 1623. ![]()

The prestige novel5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() The camera is predominantly handheld, rarely static, situated in interior locations with most exterior shots either blurred, out of focus or shrouded in freezing mist. Nolan’s already been vocal about how he didn’t want The Prestige to feel or look like a period movie, and it’s certainly steadfastly unconventional. But it is perhaps more of an eyebrow-raiser when you consider that The Prestige is situated in an entirely different genre. Hardly a shock when you note that his adaptation of Christopher Priest’s novel was penned with his sibling and Memento co-creator Jonathan, and that they optioned the book around the same time as Memento was released. ![]() (Unless the usual order isn’t what you’re expecting after all, he was the first director to begin the Batman story at the beginning.) So it’s no surprise that the man who brought us a modern noir about a man with short-term memory loss through a brain-straining reverse-chronological structure should present a Victorian murder-mystery tale of such beautiful convolutions that the dizzying struggle to follow it provides half the entertainment.įor, despite the return of Batman Begins’ Christian Bale and Michael Caine, and the big-name face-off promise that Nolan used to sell Insomnia, the film The Prestige most closely resembles is Memento. He’s a filmmaker who clearly believes that every story should have a beginning, a middle and an end, only not necessarily in that order. ![]() You always know where you are with Christopher Nolan, in that it’s often hard to know where you are. ![]()

Son of a witch by gregory maguire5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() This was something I loved about the book, as the dense, twisted, complex tone of helped to characterize Elphaba for me the lost, sparser, somewhat unconnected, occasionally clumsy writing very much characterized Liir for me. This is his story, and so yes, it is a very different book than and it would ring false if it wasn't. It's something I find rather amusing, considering Liir's struggle throughout the entirety of the book: to find his own voice as he is asked over and over again both by his own desires and by the needs of others to take Elphaba's place. And a sequel can be more than just the continuation of its predecessor's story. īut here's the thing: a book is more than the sum of it's parts. ![]() The story is badly paced (most of the 'action' happens in the last third), the reader spends most of the time being confused as to what's going on (while it is a third person narrative, it is limited third person), some of the characters seemed half-drawn, the narrative is very disconnected (occasionally, emotionless), it completely lacked an ending (.I won't spoil things, but it's left very open ended), and most importantly, that it is nothing like. To those who hated it, I say this: I see what your problems are. ![]() You will notice, however, that I gave this book five stars. I've read a lot of reviews for this book and most people seemed to hate it. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() The Disappearing ActĪnalyzing a play is not like analyzing a poem. ![]() Plays are also peculiar in that their contextual differences also include live performances, providing us with not just bibliographic codes, but performance codes as well. The method of analyzing the bibliographic codes - what changes about the text and its context from publication to publication - shows us that it is important to read different versions of a supposedly single text in order to learn new things about the author and the context she was writing in. ![]() But in considering King Lear (or Johnson’s Plumes, in this study), there is no way to acknowledge any one publication as more important than the other. People universally acknowledge that Leonardo’s smirking lady resides in the Louvre, although we can access a picture or a copy online with the click of a button. He opens his discussion of bibliographic codes by posing a question about a play: “If the ‘Mona Lisa’ is in Paris at the Louvre, where is King Lear ? This question opens important issues of what constitutes the (or is it a?) text” (Bornstein 5). George Bornstein, the scholar whose method of bibliographic analysis is the basis of our project, focuses primarily on the changes a poem experiences in different contexts of publication (e.g. ![]()

Berthe morisot jean dominique rey5/27/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() However, she was underestimated for more than a century-most probably because she was a woman. Morisot's paintings demonstrate how far ahead of her time she was when she created them, pioneering a new style of painting. Likewise, she was heralded by the greatest writers of her time in this tribute to her, an anthology of citations from Paul Valéry, Stéphane Mallarmé, and Jean Cocteau offers an intimate portrait of the artist and her work. ![]() A detailed and highly personal account of the life and works of one of the most influential female Impressionist painters: Berthe Morisot.īerthe Morisot won over the Impressionists with her talent and became the first woman of the group alongside Monet, Degas, Renoir, Pissarro, and Sisley. ![]()

Dune by Frank Herbert5/27/2023 ![]() ![]() As melange can only be produced on Arrakis, control of the planet is a coveted and dangerous undertaking. ![]() Melange is also necessary for space navigation, which requires a kind of multidimensional awareness and foresight that only the drug provides. While the planet is an inhospitable and sparsely populated desert wasteland, it is the only source of melange, or "spice", a drug that extends life and enhances mental abilities. It tells the story of young Paul Atreides, whose family accepts the stewardship of the planet Arrakis. ĭune is set in the distant future amidst a feudal interstellar society in which various noble houses control planetary fiefs. In 2003, it was described as the world's best-selling science fiction novel. It is the first installment of the Dune saga. It tied with Roger Zelazny's This Immortal for the Hugo Award in 1966 and it won the inaugural Nebula Award for Best Novel. Dune is a 1965 epic science fiction novel by American author Frank Herbert, originally published as two separate serials in Analog magazine. ![]() |
